VN24 - 08-11-2023 (D/M/Y) - Holzwickede A2 / Germany - A serious accident occurred on the A1 Freeway between the Schwerte junction and the Dortmund Unna junction (A1 / A44) shortly after 12 noon. The 50-year-old driver of a hazardous goods truck with a tank container was traveling northbound when he approached the end of a traffic jam shortly after the Lichtendorf service area. The driver steered hard to the left, but rammed into the rear left side of the car in front of him. As a result, the truck swung up, overturned onto its left side and skidded into the left-hand lane until it reached its final position. The outer insulation of the 21,000 liter tank ripped open, but the tank itself and the caps remained tight and retained the sodium hydrogen sulfite (UN 86/2922) which, according to the police, was inside. The 37-year-old female car driver suffered minor injuries in the accident, the truck driver was seriously injured according to police reports. To upright and recover the truck, a tow truck and a mobile crane had to lift the wreckage piece by piece in an hour-long procedure to ensure that the tank could be completely emptied with a pump into a replacement vehicle. Meanwhile, the fire department provided fire protection and illuminated the scene with floodlights. The entire operation lasted around 15 hours.
