The brand-new, small 2022 Ford Maverick outsold both the bigger Toyota Tundra and also it’s bigger older brother in the Ford lineup, the Ford Ranger.
According to figures from The Fast Lane Truck report, Ford moved 6,513 Mavericks in January, in contrast to 5,237 Rangers during the same time.
Toyota moved 4952 in the same period. The sales numbers for the Ranger as well as the Tundra are down a lot from the same period last year. In January of 2021, Ford shipped 6,102 Rangers and Tundras, while Toyota sold 6,334 Tundras.

Now we know comparing a Maverick to a Ranger to a Tundra isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison, but we’re sharing these numbers from The Fast Lane to underscore the popularity of the Maverick.
In the smaller trucks category, the Maverick still has some work to do if it wants to knock off the perennial top selling Toyota Tacoma. The Tacoma is so far ahead in the race it’s hard to imagine its reign ever coming to an end, but anything is possible. The Tacoma moved 15,000 units in the same time period that the Maverick sold 5,500…the ranger sold 5,200…the Honda Ridgeline sold 3,300 units…and the Hyundai Santa Cruz sold 2,800.
One of the complicating factors, of course, is that some makers have had trouble getting inventory onto dealer lots because of chip shortages. Could the Santa Cruz lead this category if dealers had more inventory to peddle? And is the Maverick’s head start too much for Hyundai to overcome?
So what do you think? We would love to hear from you so let us know in the comments below. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
