Threshold work is one of the easiest and most beneficial exercises you can do with your dog. I love it because it can be integrated into your every day routine, costing you no more than a few extra seconds a day to implement. In their natural world, dogs use spatial pressure to move other dogs away or claim something as their own. To begin practicing, pick a threshold…any threshold. That can be a gate, a door, a crate or the car. The list is virtually endless. Stand with your back to whatever it is you want to claim. The whole idea is to slow your dog down and control the way he goes through that particular threshold. He should move through it on your terms, not his. Square off to your dog so that you are facing down his spine. Wait until he gives you eye contact and has a calm demeanor. If you’re having trouble achieving this, take a step in towards him. That will likely result in him looking up at you. Practice this exercise in silence. What we are looking for here is organic compliance, based on respect. Once your dog is calm and gives you eye contact, invite him through the threshold. Once you get this down, it will become a natural part of your routine with your dog. The benefits of this work are amazing! Please go to my YouTube channel to see this video and it’s entirety. The link is in my bio.
