Most people think of resource guarding as a dog who guards his food or toys. Actually, When a dog claims a human, it’s a form of resource guarding. The human is actually a “high value resource” to the dog. After all, the human feeds, walks and cares for the dog. The dog is very aware that the human is of value to them. If the relationship between the human and the dog is not balanced, that will exacerbate the issue. If the dog views the human as soft or weak, they are more likely to claim or guard them.

This is an in-depth issue that requires more than one video to cover. However there are things you can do in the interim. If your dog begins to posture or move in front of you when another dog approaches you, make sure your dog is behind you, preferably in a sit. Your dog needs to feel that you are in charge of the situation when you are approached by another dog or person. Quickly but calmly take care of your own dog’s position before addressing the dog coming towards you.
