Why you shouldn’t retreat with a dog

If we back up when a dog jumps up on us or body slams us as he goes through a door, we’re inadvertently nurturing disrespect. Many times dogs will seemingly run over other dogs when they become older and feeble. It’s almost as if their status in the pack has fallen because of their age.

Dogs respect us when we stand our ground. In some cases, we may be required to do more than stand our ground to get our message across. If a dog jumps on me, I never turn my body away or retreat. I either stand my ground or I take a step in to keep the dog from taking over my space. If done properly, the dog rarely challenges me again.

The same holds true for thresholds. Rather than allowing your dog to rush through gates and doors, ask him to sit down, calm down, and give you eye contact before exiting.

These nuances in how dogs view things is everything. Until we understand how the dog thinks, we will never be able to resolve the behavior issues that concern us. (Full video on YouTube. The link is in my bio.)
