In part 12 of our series on #hadith, we look at hadith which seem to promote violence against others. Dr. Shabir Ally reminds us that when we take a balanced approach to hadith, we must first ask whether the hadith is actually from the #Prophet (peace be upon him) or not. The #Quran describes the Prophet as a mercy to the worlds, so is it consistent with the Quran to see him as cruel and promoting indiscriminate violence against his fellow human beings? Each hadith must be tested rationally, not just the chain of narrators which first conveyed the hadith, but also its consistency with the primacy of the Quran and its message. Dr. Shabir gives us an example of a well-known hadith which is sometimes quoted as proof that Islam in its entirety is a non-peaceful and violent religion.
