In part 3 of our series, we look at how the early Muslims memorized, collected, and finally wrote down the hadith. Without negating the importance of the hadith for understanding Islam, Dr. Shabir Ally points to the primacy of the Quran over the hadith and explains the manner in which our understanding of hadith can be reasonably balanced. Using the hadith as his guide, he shows just how much can be discovered when properly evaluating historical sources. For example, It may be surprising for us to learn that one of the most esteemed hadith collections ever compiled was written by Imam al-Bukari, who passed away at the later date of 256 H, or that the Prophet (peace be upon him) at one point in his mission actually forbade the writing of anything but the Quran. How can these facts be understood in the context of early Islamic developments, and how can we use this knowledge in our own time? Watch this video to find out!
