What role should #hadith have in our times? The hadith are sayings, actions and approvals attributed to the #prophetmuhammad, and they're an important source of #islamic law and rulings. Dr. Shabir Ally says that some poeple are leaving #islam because of hadith they view as problematic. In this #newseries, Dr. Shabir will introduce the hadith books, compare how the #Quran and hadith were compiled, detail the rise of forged hadith, explain how the hadith gained prominence over the Quran, look at some problematic hadith and discuss the need to engage in textual analysis of the hadith and develop a balanced approach towards hadith. Fortunately, there are modern solutions to evaluating hadiths that pre-modern scholars did not always consider in depth. The classical scholars' criteria for sorting true and false hadiths was primarily concerned with the evaluation of the chain of narrators (isnad). Were these narrators trustworthy or not? However, a more modern approach is to ask if the content and words of the hadith (matn) are an accurate reflection of what we know about the Quran and the Messenger (peace be upon him). If one is disturbed or bothered by the content of some hadith, this series is essential for developing a new understanding and removing a crisis of conscience.
