How to fix delaminated RV wall & siding. Do-Your-Self repair kits provide inexpensive answer to many water damage problems on RV filon & fiberglass sided RV's, Campers, 5th Wheels, & Motorhomes.

In many cases the RV wall does not have to be removed. Composet SLV™ is specially formulated RV-specific 2-part resin system that bonds most RV wall components. The Super Low Viscocity (SLV) is very thin to flow and penetrate the wood, fiberglass, and styrofoam. The resin is solvent free so as not to damage styrofoam. Solvent based glues and even epoxy that has been cut with (watered down) with cheap solvents can melt styrofoam and dissolve contact cement that is inside many RV walls.

Repairing a delaminated RV wall can be a daunting task. The best way is turn it over to an RV dealer and have them replace the entire sidewall. However, the cost can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. For many RV owners spending this much money does not make sense, or is not practical. But there is an option- repairing the delaminated wall using a do-it-yourself RV Delmaination Repair Kit.

We have become familiar with just such a kit produced by Composet Products L.L.C. Their kits have the well respected RV specific Composet SLV™ epoxy resin system. While their are a number of general purpose epoxies on the market, in our experience and opinion Composet SLV™ is the right choice that gives you the best chance of a successful repair...and has a proven track record in RV wall repair.

Why does delamination occur in an RV?
In many cases a leak path opens allowing water to enter the wall. Typically this happens adjacent to windows, vents, lights, roof lines, etc. Age, quality of the original workmanship and materials, vibration, and exposure to the elements are factors related to water intrusion. We typically see a situation where water breaks down the glue that bonds the layers of the Luann plywood.

How can you spot wall delamination?
Look at the wall from an angle and check for bulges or bubbles. Most sidewalls are not perfectly flat, so this can be tricky, however, the bubble can be worse when the wall is in direct sunlight due to the de-bonded material expanding at different rates. Next, tap lightly on the wall with a plastic screwdriver handle, solid areas and delaminated areas sound different.

Having the right glue is crucial to fixing Camper wall delamination. We sampled a few different glues advertised for RV’s and concluded that there is no comparison to the Composet SLV™ formula.

We tested products from West, Max General Purpose, The Epoxy Store, Gorilla, Three Bond, Git Rot and others. Many initially looked promising, but in our opinion either set too fast, did not have good bond strength, or did not exhibit the desired thermal flex in our in our tests. While some brands were relatively inexpensive, we came to the conclusion that you get what you pay for. In our opinion most of these resins are not suitable for use in repairing RV walls.

The same is true for fiberglass repair products and boat repair epoxy. They are ideal for fiberglass boats and car bodies, but we feel it is not the best choice for bonding the composite Filon, plywood, and Styrofoam that RV, motorhome, and camper trailer walls are made of.
