The 2.0-litre version of the Cupra Leon Estate will demolish a 0-62mph sprint in 4.9 seconds and make your dog sick at the same time. What more could you want from a family car?

Some numbers for you to consider: the 2.0-litre version we’re using as our test car produces 310hp which is sent to all-four wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG). That’s impressive, as it almost matches the current VW Golf R. Probably because underneath it all, it’s actually a Golf R with a tiny decrease in performance. You also don’t get the Golf’s optional drift mode, but then again who actually drifts their daily driver? There’s even a PHEV version, which combines a 1.4-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and battery system, and offers up to 32 miles of electric-only running. Prices start at £37,000 for the PHEV or just under £40,000 for the 2.0-litre. With the Golf R and Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 Shooting Brake being more expensive with similar levels of performance and practicality, is the Cupra a bit of a bargain?
