Mainstream hybrid cars may have been popularized by hatchbacks like the Prius, but these days their ranks also include a wide variety of vehicles. Plug-in electric vehicles, or PHEVs, use a gasoline engine coupled with an electric motor and a large battery pack that can be charged by plugging it in.
