Dull, painful, muscle tension just below your skull? - THIS video will help fix your problem!

Suboccipital release is simple but can be quite painful, so what we are going to need is a ball, I choose to use massage or lacrosse balls, you could use a tennis ball, either will be fine to use for this sub occipital release.

So to begin with for this suboccipital release, we need to lay on our back, to help get a good position and ensure you can relax into this as much as possible, we want to raise the head with a firm surface, we can do this with a book if you have nothing else to hand.

Place our tennis or lacrosse ball on the book and lay back onto it. From here we can move our head and locate the primary area of tension, both left and right.

We can then hold with this pressure – relaxing into this position – for 15 – 60 seconds, then move to the next area.

To speed this process up, we can use a peanut shaped massage tool to get a bi-lateral sub occipital release.

By using this peanut shaped tool, we can more effectively lay back into this occipital release, allow the pressure to move upwards, towards the top of your head as you do this, it will stretch and release at the same time – this may be painful but try to hold for 15 – 60 seconds then repeat as needed.

So the secret to a successful long lasting suboccipital release, is the masseter muscle. A muscle that causes TMD pain and this is a great exercise for TMD pain relief, if TMD pain relief is something you'd like to see more of, let me know that TMD pain relief is a video you'd like to see in the future.

The masseter is the muscle on the side of the jaw that allows us to chew. You will likely find that if you have suboccipital tension, you will also have masseter tension – so let’s also release this, we can use the single ball for this one.

Lay on your side, using the ball, locate the primary area of tension, once we find it, hold that position for 15 – 60 seconds, repeat on both sides.
You should notice how relaxed you begin to feel
