With an all-electric range of up to 35 miles and a price tag of £45,000, its only real seven-seater hybrid SUV competition is the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe.

In fact, it’s actually based on the same platform as the new Santa Fe. Like the Hyundai, you get a 13.8kWh battery that - if you watch your right foot - can serve up 35 miles of electric only range. And being a plug-in, you can charge up at home or work so you only need to use the petrol motor on longer journeys. True, the Volvo XC90 also offers plug-in fun for big families, but is the Sorento the best electrified SUV for under £50,000?
