This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV and the Kia Sorento PHEV, or plug-in hybrid, SUVs.The Santa Fe and Sorento PHEV’s have a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor, a 6-speed automatic transmission, a combined 261 horsepower and standard AWD. The Sorento has 51 km/32 miles of EV range and the Santa Fe, 50 km/30 miles of EV range. You can put regular fuel in these plug-in hybrids. For EV rebates in Canada, the Santa Fe qualifies for a Federal rebate of $2,500, not the full $5,000 because it has a 13.8 kWh battery. Electrified vehicles need to have a battery that is 15 kWh or larger to qualify for the full Federal rebate. There are also Provincial rebates available in most Provinces. Provinces that are excluded include, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario. In the US, both the Santa Fe and Sorento qualify for a tax credit up to $6,587.The Santa Fe and Sorento PHEV’s come standard with a 3.3 kW onboard charger. With a 120-volt outlet, your charging time is 10.5 hours and with a 240-volt outlet, it’s 3.4 hours. Hyundai and Kia vehicles are becoming more upscale and you can see it in the interior of both vehicles. A standout in the Santa Fe are the quilted leather seats, a 12.3” digital driver display and a convenient and practical floating centre console with ample storage. There are plenty of physical buttons in the cabin including a button shifter and you will find it to be open, spacious and comfortable. The battery pack is located under the front passenger seat, so it has no impact on cabin or cargo space. Some standard features include, an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, leather-seating surfaces, heated front seats, a leather wrapped heated steering wheel and 8 way power driver and passenger seats. The top trim is where you’ll find ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a wireless charger, the digital driver display, 4-way power driver’s lumbar support, a panoramic sunroof and proximity activated smart liftgate. There is no head-up display available in this PHEV or the option of the larger 10.25” touchscreen in Canada, it is available in the US. The Sorento PHEV has an open and spacious cabin, it is a 6-seater vehicle with standard captain’s chairs in the second row. There is not offering of a bench seat. We found the front seats to be quite firm in this Sorento, more so than the Santa Fe. Some standard features, include, leatherette upholstery, power driver and passenger seats, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an 8” touchscreen, a wireless charger, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The top two trims is where you’ll find the larger 10.25” touchscreen, heated rear seats and advance smart cruise control. The top trim has a 12.3” digital driver display, Bose premium sound system, a head-up display, driver seat memory and ventilated front seats.
