Berin and Garfield's Handbook (7ed.) Webinar Series Webinar

Presented by Bruce Wampold & Mary Beth Connolly Gibbons
on November 13th, 2023

Abstract:
Decades of psychotherapy research have explored the core ingredients of effective psychotherapies. The presenters will provide updated reviews of both psychotherapy process and therapist factors as they relate to the outcomes of psychotherapy. They will review common and theory specific change processes and change mechanisms across multiple types of psychotherapy. Though a large number of studies have been conducted, they will focus on studies conducted in more recent years that implemented designs and analyses of process–outcome that improve the likelihood that obtained associations may be causal rather than spurious. Beyond specific change processes, there is also robust evidence in clinical trials and naturalistic settings that some therapists are consistently more effective than others. Importantly, research has made recent advances toward the goal of identifying the characteristics and actions of effective therapists. Methods and research regarding therapist effects and the characteristics and actions of effective therapists will be presented. Implications for future research, therapist training, and strategies for improving the quality of psychotherapy services will be discussed.
