We know how easy it is for words and messages to become distorted on social media. Dr. Shabir Ally says we we find a similar phenomenon in the first few centuries of Islam with regards to Hadith. People fabricated hadith and claimed that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said or did something that he didn't. This happened very early after the Prophet's death, with forged hadith reflecting political motivations, theological differences and power dynamics. Muslim scholars have always been aware of the existence of forged hadith, and they did their best to sift through them. Now it is time for us to think about whether their judgment is final or whether these is scope for us to revisit and ask the questions all over again.
