This video looks at the main features and improvements provided in the new R3forNZ 155.216.116 firmware update for the Uniden R3.

In addition to the anti-theft personalisation previously seen only on the R7 international, this firmware also has a specific K band update designed for driving in New Zealand. “K Narrow (NZ)” thereby mirrors as far as possible the K band ‘K1’ segment on the R7 NZ. Unlike on the Uniden R7 'international' version there is not yet any ability to have a user definable K band segmentation on the R3. The main issue with the R3 remains that the hardware limits its ability to scan below 24.050.

However, as also demonstrated coincidentally in testing, the main strength of the R3 remains with its renowned ability to sniff out Ka band at great range and sensitivity.

In conclusion, the improved R3 firmware is definitely a worthwhile update. However, for those people considering buying a new detector for use in New Zealand, consider carefully whether you want the added benefit of arrows, and/or the ability to detect mobile redflex camera vans. For those extra abilities the R3 is just not going to deliver. Of the available Uniden detectors, the Uniden DFR9forNZ or the Uniden R7 (R7 NZ or R7 International) are in my opinion much better all round detectors for use in New Zealand than the R3.
