There are multiple ways to extract microplastics for analysis, mostly using density separation. I tried a technique called Oil Extraction Process. Because most plastics are Oleophilic ("oil-loving"), a mixture of oil and water will separate plastic into the oil phase. Everything else will settle into the water phase, allowing you to collect the microplastics for futher study.

I collected sediment from my local lake (Lake Champlain) and ran it through the OEP, with varying levels of success. I eventually got a good sample and was able to image it on the Scanning Electron Microscope. It's hard to know if any individual piece is a microplastic, but we can use morphology and EDS clues to help decide.
