One of the most exciting verses in the Quran with philosophical implications is found in 6:12: “Ask them, ‘To whom belongs all that is in the heavens and earth?’ Say, ‘To God. He has taken it upon Himself to be Merciful. He will certainly gather you on the Day of Resurrection, which is beyond all doubt. Those who deceive themselves will not believe.”
People sometimes ask philosophical questions about whether God can lie or commit moral evil. While these complex questions deserve detailed, intelligent answers, this passage gives one reply when it says that God has obliged himself to be Merciful. Dr. Shabir Ally explains why we should not despair but instead be hopeful at the thought of our resurrection and final judgment.
