Do jinns actually exist, or are they folklore? Dr. Shabir Ally says that from the Quranic perspective, jinns do exist, but the Quran is silent about whether they can possess people. Dr. Shabir says that it's hard to imagine that God would have given jinns power to overcome human beings. Human beings have a responsibility before God for their actions. If they can claim that a jinn possessed them when doing wrong, no one would be able to disprove that claim. He says that the most commonly cited hadith on jinn possession is not in a major collection and cannot be used with authority. In conclusion, there's nothing in the Quran or in the life of the Prophet Muhammad that is authentic that leads us to believe that jinns possess people. Finally, Dr. Shabir explains what he would do if someone came to him and asked for help believing that they were possessed by a jinn.
