Tis is a Motormouth Couple Car Review of the all-new 2022 Hyundai Tucson PHEV, or plug-in electric SUV. If you are looking for a plug-in hybrid, the Tucson is going to be tough to beat.
There’s a reason why this Hyundai is so popular; it offers such incredible value. The Tucson PHEV has a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a 6-speed automatic transmission. It gets a combined 261 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque with 53 km/33 miles of EV range, standard AWD. In Canada, the Tucson PHEV comes loaded with so many features including, an 8” touchscreen, a 10.25” digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, heated and ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, power drivers seat, leather interior, a panoramic sunroof, heated rear seats, 10-colour ambient lighting, a hands-free smart liftgate and 19” wheels. For an extra $2,700 CAD you can get a few more features like a 10.25” touchscreen, driver seat memory, power passenger seat, 64 colour ambient lighting and premium projector type LED headlights. In the US, the base SEL trim has quite a low starting price and comes with minimal features like cloth seats, a power drivers seat, heated front seats, an 8” touchscreen, and wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The top Limited trim has all the extra features. This PHEV qualifies for the $2,500 Federal EV rebate in Canada, there are Provincial rebates available in participating provinces. In the US, the Tucson PHEV qualifies for a tax credit up to $6,587. The Tucson has a 7.2 kW on-board charger, with a 120-volt level 1 outlet your charging time is 10.6 hours and with a 240-volt level 2 outlet, it’s 1.7 hours. Tucson fuel economy is a combined city/highway rating of 2.9Le/100km, 80 MPGe. With the battery depleted it gets 6.8L/100km, 34 MPG city and 6.6L/100km, 36 MPG highway. The Tucson starts at $43,499 CAD/$34,900 USD and the top trim is $46,199 CAD/$42,700 USD.
