Parents will deny it, but according to an Australian study, 69 per cent of parents can identify a favourite child. The pressure of carrying the golden child label can be a weighty responsibility and the effects of feeling less liked can be lasting and traumatic. Insight host Kumi Taguchi chats to different families, investigating whether favourite children exist, and how this may affect filial relationships. Guests include the Nguyen Family who discuss which one of their three daughters is the favourite for the month. The Walker family who all agree that their mother’s favourite is the youngest child. Single mother Janna who has three children and holds a soft spot in her heart for her eldest who is most like her. Rhett who felt neglected and less loved than his older brother Michael Hutchence, the front man of INXS. Leanne who is the youngest of five children, Chinese family, born in Malaysia and says her brothers were the favourite due to the concept of an heir and spare. Yustin was one of five children in Indonesia and was treated like a princess as she was the first girl in the family for many years. Yustin’s daughter Kelly says her mother is often immature and childish, but she understands it’s because she was raised to think she’s special.
