SD City Lifeguards were called about an abandoned boat off the “Dog Park” portion of Fiesta Island. The Lifeguards found the boat floating approximately 20 yards off of the beach. They could see that the straps and ropes to the boat had been cut.

They were unsure if the boat had been used in a Human Smuggling event, if it had been stolen and not reported yet, or if someone had abandoned it to get rid of it.

The lifeguards were going to tow the boat as it was a water safety hazard, so they left the area. A male came running up with a fishing pole and started casting towards the boat.

We initially thought he might be fishing for any fish under the boat, but eventually, he snagged the boat and pulled it to shore. When asked if the boat was his, he said, “Yes.” When asked how the boat drifts in the bay, he said, “He didn’t know.” The SD City Lifeguards were recalled to inform them of the developing story.
