Acute gastritis is a synonym for acute vomiting. Acute gastritis is produced by inflammation of the gastric mucosa. The vomiting reflex originates in the vomiting center of the medulla oblongata. Dietary indiscretion is one of the causes of acute gastritis. Vomiting of sudden onset is a characteristic clinical sign of acute gastritis. The praying posture in dogs is an indicator of abdominal pain. Blood work is part of the diagnosis of acute gastritis. Antiemetic drugs and gastroprotectants are important in the treatment of acute gastritis in dogs.
The prognosis for acute gastritis in dogs is good once the cause of sudden vomiting has been identified.
