A viewer asks, “Why do Muslim women pray behind men?” Dr. Shabir Ally explains that it may have to do with the nature of society at the time. He says that the one exception is at the ka’bah, the most sacred site of Muslim worship, where #men and women ‘are part of the same human stream’. If the need for women to be separated from men was so important, #God could have arranged the circumambulation ritual differently. Nevertheless, #women continue to pray behind men almost universally in many different parts of the world, and he doesn’t have an inherent difficulty with that. But since there’s nothing in the Quran that prohibits a different arrangement and there’s no dictate of the Prophet (peace be upon him) insisting that it must be done this way, he says is open in case some Muslims want to do it differently.
