My son is now 20 months old and I have been listening to this podcast since before he was born. I highly recommend it! With baby #2 due this month, I have enjoyed the episodes Janet shares about siblings.

When you dive into Janet's parenting philosophy, you'll likely notice that she encourages language in many of the same ways that I do: an emphasis on two-way communication, speaking to our children like they are whole people from birth, using our authentic voice and first person, talking about real and meaningful things during our day-to-day life, and following your child's pace when it comes to reading books to foster a love of books.

While the majority of children pick up language naturally when we speak to them as whole people from birth, if you have concerns that your child may not be progressing in language development, Janet recommends in her book that you seek an evaluation from a professional. I echo this recommendation.

I do believe it is highly respectful to your child to seek out help, guidance, resources, and speech and language support from a Speech Therapist when needed. In many cases with children, there is something as simple as fluid in the child's ears from a previous ear infection causing a mild hearing loss, making it difficult for a child to hear words clearly. In this case, medical attention is needed and it could be as simple as draining the fluid in the ears with tubes. Often after this one change, children can hear clearly and they are able to begin talking and listening because sounds are no longer muffled. As a Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist, I am trained to uncover the root of the communication break-down so that your child can be able to begin communicating.

The strategies that I teach in my videos are research-based and shown to help children understand language and imitate language. So while Janet may not share the same emphasis on the strategy of "repetition" for example, since it is not quite as natural to the normal flow of conversation for typically developing children, if your child is not understanding language, the strategy of "repetition" that I teach is a way to facilitate learning in a way that is evidence-based for all children, not only children with language delays or disorders of language. I wanted to make that distinction so that you understand the heart behind why I teach the way I do.

Hey! I’m Adrienne, Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist from LearnWithAdrienne.com and you want to help your child:
☀️communicate clearly
☀️listen well
☀️gain life skills

In my YouTube videos, I teach a variety of strategies to help children learn to talk, but in my online class for children, I teach much more in-depth, revealing the actual step-by-step system I use with my own speech therapy clients to get them from saying only a handful of words to talking in sentences and having conversations. My online class is structured with checklists and printouts where you can track your child's progress.

The goal of the online class is to give you the skills needed to plug in the speech strategies into your daily life with your child and to implement the building blocks, strategies, and concepts during meal time, car riding time, play time, outdoor time, etc.

Here is more info about the class so you can see if it would be a good fit for you and your child.
