2023 came in with a roar as a series of historic storms and hurricane-force winds swept through our service area, uprooting hundreds of trees and downing 1,800 power lines and more than 400 poles. In the months that followed, we took holistic action to enhance our storm response processes to address the extreme weather events that are now more frequent due to climate change.

Despite the stormy start, 2023 was a year of transformative achievements, marked by bold action, and progress toward a clean energy future.

2023 was also the year that we took the stage as a local, regional and international authority on how to decarbonize a utility in a reliable, affordable, safe and equitable way. From receiving national innovation grants to funding community projects and serving as the go-to resource for electric transportation, SMUD was once again rated as a top utility in the nation. In 2023, we took bold steps toward achieving our 2030 Clean Energy Vision goals, while leaving no one behind.
