Tesla has applied to regulatory authorities for an expansion of its Shanghai Gigafactory, which will increase the annual production capacity of powertrains from the current 1.25 million units to 1.75 million units. The company also plans to produce pouch-type battery cells for the first time, but in limited quantities.

According to Bloomberg, Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory is making final preparations for the trial production of the updated Model 3. The upgraded model is highly anticipated by Musk, who believes it will better compete with Chinese rivals.
