Tesla has shared a rare look at Gigafactory Shanghai’s Model Y production line with a video of how it does mega casting of Model Y at Giga Shanghai.

"Giga Shanghai is becoming a production powerhouse. Watch mega castings for Model Y coming out of 6k-ton Giga presses. The whole process is fully automated, including quality check. Pretty mind blowing to say the least," writes our friend Ray, who tweets at Ray4Tesla and who shared Tesla's mega casting video of the Model Y from Giga Shanghai on Twitter.

Tesla's recent Weibo video specified that Giga Shanghai’s Giga Press machines are massive 6,000-ton die-casting equipment that integrates the Model Y’s back plate into a whole. Tesla China noted that its use of megacasts for the Model Y results in several advantages, including a reduction in weight, a more streamlined welding process, and a more simplified build.

"Tesla also remarked that the Model Ys’ megacasts improve the vehicle’s overall build quality. This was a point highlighted by auto veteran Sandy Munro in his ongoing teardown of the 2021 Model 3 from the Fremont Factory. Commenting on the Model 3’s build quality, Munro noted that the use of megacasted components should allow Tesla to make its builds more consistent, as fewer parts result in fewer areas for errors," reports Maria Merano at Teslarati.

How do you do collision repairs? are there parts made for repairs? welding is still required.

I think these cars, made by giga presses, will change the face of the insurance agencies and what they repair or write off. So the collision repairs in new Teslas built as single body, will probably be no different than any other car, at least in Canada. Any accident that involved the structured the car, even the tiniest of band, is an automatic write-off here. In Canada insurance company only fix fenders, lights, or bumper, any deeper is write-off.

That Gigapress is crazy. 70 parts to 1 part with traditional auto just can’t do this they will kill jobs at not only themselves but also their suppliers. This is even scary. It will put an end to paying employee benefits and retirements. What is going to happen to millions of people who work in the industry? How do they find new jobs?

What we’re witnessing is robots making Robotaxis. Robots that have specific functions and not the “terminator” type.

What we are seeing here is Large scale and precision casting at speed. Unlike any car assembly line outside of Tesla. Just think of the number of processes that the mega casting has replaced. Huge cost saving. But at what human cost?

Has anyone ever outlined how many employees (or employee hours) per car of output are involved in MIC3 vs Freemont 3? MICY vs Freemont Y?

Tesla brings new word to manufacturing. Turning 70+ parts into one part another exponential growth in manufacturing.
