We’ve installed a lot of drawers and rolling cabinets in our shop recently and found out it can be finicky to install drawer fronts on drawer boxes efficiently and precisely.

This is a job that can’t be “pre-done” well, it’s much better to install the fronts after the drawer boxes are installed or connected to a pair of drawer glides.

Rockler® is now offering drawer front installation clamps. They are moderate duty, priced under $40 for a pair, and work quite well for small to medium-sized drawer fronts. The frames of the clamps are made of stamped steel to keep the units small enough to fit around the sides and top edges of the drawer boxes while in use. This allows you to roll the drawer back into position and see how the reveal of the front is.

However, this comes with a trade-off. When significant pressure is applied when clamping the front into place, the frame will deflect. That’s not a problem when small to medium fronts are being installed, but large fronts can be too heavy and will tend to slip because you can’t apply enough clamping pressure without risking damage to the clamps.

Even so, we’ve found them to be valuable enough to purchase a set and use them for many projects. The clamps are marked with a “L” and a “R” for both sides of the drawer box, and there are indexing screws for side-to-side positioning. This is especially handy when installing a column of drawer fronts.

The clamps are akin to a set of helping hands that allow you to set the position of the drawer front, test the fit, and then drive screws from the inside of the drawer box to affix the front securely. Then, the clamps are easily removed and set for the next front.

Even with the moderate gauge of the tools, we think it warrants having a pair of these if you are building even a few cabinets. It’ll make your life easier and you’ll get precise results quickly and with less frustration.

Here’s another tool that Rocker® offers that we’ve found to be useful. Their Clamp-It® corner clamping jig works quite well. It’s not cheap, but it does the job well. We bought 4 of them, along with their Clamp-It® assembly squares. The combo is about $35 per set, so a set of 4 is about $140. Again, these are light helping hands that will hold cabinet carcass parts squarely in place until glue up and assembly is done.
