In 1973, a group of rural Nebraskans came together with a passion. Concerned about the loss of economic opportunity in agriculture and the decline of rural communities, they founded the Center for Rural Affairs.

And on Friday, Sept. 8, 2023, Center for Rural Affairs celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Current and former staff, board members, and supporters gathered at Nissen Family Vineyards near Hartington, Nebraska.

Executive Director Brian Depew, Board President Dennis Demmel, Chief Administrative Officer Linda Butkus, Farm & Community Assistant Director Wyatt Fraas, Center supporter Julia Kleinschmit, and former Board members and long-time donors Connie and David Hansen all spoke at the event. They all shared stories of their work and experiences with the Center and its programs.
