This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the new Toyota Corolla Cross subcompact crossover versus the new Honda HR-V subcompact SUV. The HR-V and Corolla Cross have a 2L 4-cylinder matched to a CVT but the Toyota offers more power, 169 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque compared to the Honda with 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. Both have FWD and AWD options available. The HR-V and Corolla Cross offer a comfortable drive and are excellent in the city but once you get them on the highway, they both lack power when passing and cabin noise increases. Comparing size, these are good family vehicle options in this segment. The HR-V is over 4.2” longer than the Corolla Cross. The Toyota has an inch more front row legroom, the HRV wins in second row space offering an extra 5.7” and they both have about the same amount of cargo capacity behind the second row. Overall cargo space goes to the Corolla Cross with an extra 11 cubic feet of space. The HR-V offers 7” of ground clearance which is less than the Corolla Cross at 8.2”. Both the Toyota Corolla Cross and Honda HR-V are equipped with similar features, but both don’t offer ventilated front seats, heated rear seats or a power passenger seat. The Corolla Cross has a few features the HR-V doesn’t like an available power tailgate and a power driver seat. In the US, a power driver seat is available on the top trim of the HR-V but not in Canada. The HR-V has available wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto which the 2022 Corolla Cross doesn’t have but it is coming for 2023 along with a Corolla Cross Hybrid option. The Toyota Corolla Cross has better fuel economy, AWD gets 8.1L/100 km, 29 MPG city and 7.4L/100 km, 32 MPG highway. HR-V 9.4L/100 km, 25 MPG city and 7.8L/100 km, 30 MPH highway.
The Honda HR-V is more expensive with a FWD starting price of $28,730 CAD/$23,650 USD compared to the Corolla Cross $24,890 CAD/$22,445 USD. HR-V AWD $31,030 CAD/$25,150 USD, Corolla Cross AWD $26,290 CAD/$23,745 USD. The HR-V AWD top trim $37,130 CAD/$28,950 USD and the Corolla Cross AWD top trim $33,990 CAD/$27,875 USD.
