What makes it more impressive is that Marcus Aurelius didn’t have to do anything. That would have been one of the perks of being Emperor. He could have gotten other people to do everything for him. And he must have been tempted routinely to do so. Because we know that his physical health fluctuated. We know he had insomniatic tendencies. And we know he didn’t want to be Emperor. He wanted to be a philosopher.

Marcus motivated himself to not only do a job he didn’t particularly want to do, but to do it better than anyone had before or since.
