Periodontal disease is caused by anaerobic bacteria forming plaque in the periodontal pockets which colonizes and forms biofilm. When perio disease is not controlled, it leads to other systemic issues such as heart disease, adverse pregnancy outcomes, diabetes, amongst other issues.
