TOWN CAR OR CADILLAC DEVILLE. LEAR WHY THE OTHER WAS BETTER

Lincoln's popularity has caused the term "town car" to become almost synonymous with Lincoln, but the truth is there have been town cars before the Lincoln version. In fact, the first town car was actually a limousine created in the early 1920s.

Surprisingly, the "sedan de Ville" was used as a model name by Cadillac to compete with Lincoln. The name De Ville which is French meaning “of the town”.

The sedan was the primary rival to the Lincoln Continental from the 1950s to the 1990s.

It is important to note that the Lincoln L Series car, despite its fancy appearance, was not regarded as a town car. Although Lincoln produced a town car design, it was still a variant of a limousine and the first Lincoln Town Car would not be available until 1980.

TODAY WE TAKE OUR VIEWERS FOR A RIDE THRU THE YEARS 1881 THRU 2011. THIS IS THE STORY OF THE LINCOLN TOWN CAR

Ford actually began using the name Town Car in it’s Continental lineup with the addition of two formal sedans known as the Town Car and Limousine. This took place thru the 1970s but I want to start with the first generation Lincoln Town Car which was released in 1981.

For 1981, the Continental name was replaced and the new Town Car name was used for the non-Mark Lincolns. The lineup was also simplified with the elimination of the slow-selling Versailles model. The sole engine was the 302 V-8 with fuel injection and styling was virtually identical to the 1980 cars with only minor changes. The new Town Car retained the prior Continental’s exposed oblong dual headlamps and optional digital trip computer display, and added a new key-pad entry system. Lincoln’s formal upright grille was naturally retained. These cars were unashamedly aimed straight at mature customers with money in the bank.

In 1982, Lincoln adopted the Mark-Series tradition of Designer Series editions as the Cartier Edition was shifted from the Mark VI to the Town Car, becoming the top trim level; the Cartier Edition would remain part of the Town Car line through the 2003 model year.
