When BMW decided to switch the 1 Series from its traditional rear-wheel-drive layout to a more mainstream front-wheel-drive architecture, it ruffled more than a few feathers among the brand's enthusiast faithful. The game was afoot, though, as the Bavarian marque looked to evolve its compact premium hatchback into a more spacious and practical offering to better battle the latest Audi A3, Mercedes A-Class, and Volkswagen Golf.

But How Does It Drive?
The good news is that despite forsaking its historically handling-enhancing rear-driven setup, the newest 1 Series still exhibits an impressive level of driving verve and entertainment behind the wheel. Much of this can be credited to BMW's continued obsession with tuning and refining steering and suspension settings to deliver that familiar sporting DNA that reverberates throughout the lineup.

Yes, there's a bit more understeer dialed in during aggressive cornering to mask the 1 Series' nose-heavy front-driven stance, but it responds keenly to steering inputs and exhibits exemplary body control. And even with optional M Sport suspension settings that sacrifice some ride compliance in the name of sportiness, the 1 Series still delivers a comfortable and well-damped ride quality over rough pavement.

Engine Emblems Are Just Numbers, Right?
Purists will bemoan the lack of a traditional BMW inline-six under the hood, but the range of turbocharged 2.0-liter and 1.5-liter fours found in the 1 Series prove plenty potent. From the base 118i's 156 horsepower to the 261 hp M135i xDrive, the engine lineup offers buyers a suitable level of power to match their performance expectations and budgets – particularly the sweet 189 hp 120d turbodiesel. An excellent eight-speed automatic swaps cogs smartly, but we'd still love to see BMW's superb dual-clutch automatic transmission offered here.

Premium Inside, Tech Forward
The 1 Series easily lives up to its premium price point with a stylish, high-quality interior that does an excellent job of balancing sportiness and sophistication with its classic BMW design language. Tech-forward features like the optional 9.2-inch digital instrument cluster, 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, and BMW's latest iDrive infotainment software keep the 1 Series feeling fresh and modern despite its evolutionary styling updates.

Cabin space grows notably versus the outgoing model, affording comfortable seating for four adults and reasonable cargo capacity, albeit still trailing roomier mainstream compact hatch competitors like the Golf. Overall material quality impresses, though the 1 Series' expansive use of black plastic trim can make the interior feel a bit drab and monochromatic compared to some competitors.

Worth The Badge Tax?
While BMW still effortlessly manages to capture the sporting spirit enthusiasts expect, the 1 Series is no longer the driver's compact of choice in the lineup – that mantle now rests solely with the rear-driven 2 Series. Instead, the 1 Series represents a more practical evolution tailored to premium compact buyers who appreciate the cachet and upscale styling BMW brings, but with mainstream sensibilities when it comes to space, fuel efficiency, and interior tech.

If you're after the thrill-a-minute dynamics that made the outgoing 1 Series a legend, this latest iteration will likely leave you disappointed. But if a premium badge, rewarding driving dynamics, efficient performance, and cutting-edge cabin technology outweigh the loss of old-school driving purity, the new 1 Series presents a compelling option in the premium compact arena.
