The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is upon us, and picks up where the retro-funky old FJ Cruiser left off: large, capable, and still someplace short of the real Land Cruiser offered to the world’s less highway-coddled realms.

The ‘L250’ Land Cruiser is a large, nostalgic lifestyle cruiser capable of taking on some terrain: think suburban smooth-tire Jeep, just without the signature Jeep badness. It’s more approachable, more image, more affectation.

Beyond this, however, the Land Cruiser seems more easily understood by what it isn’t. It isn’t a street-compromised dirt-focused 4Runner, nor is it the sort of comfy desert tourer Toyota sells to the UN. It isn’t a family vehicle like the (notably compromised) three-row Sequoia, either.
