Mosquitoes are one of the most annoying and frequently dealt with insects in the US, but you’d be surprised by what most homeowners know, or think they know, about these bugs and their habits. So in this video, we’ll expose some of the false information associated with mosquitoes and provide you with tips on how to protect yourself from these blood-sucking pests.

MYTH 1: MOSQUITOES ARE MORE ATTRACTED TO CERTAIN BLOOD TYPES
In reality, mosquitoes have receptors on their antennae that they use to detect things like body heat, carbon dioxide, sweat, and odors that humans emit. Depending on who’s around, this could make some people stand out as mosquito magnets while everyone else is seemingly unbothered. People that wear dark clothing out are also more prone to being bitten, since darker clothes absorb more light, causing their wearers to sweat more.

MYTH 2: CERTAIN PLANTS AND ANIMALS WILL REPEL MOSQUITOES
While it’s true that lavender oil is known to repel mosquitoes, simply planting some around your home won’t have any impact. Animal activity won’t keep mosquitoes down either. Yes, mosquitoes are preyed upon by many animals like frogs, toads, and bats. However, the rate at which these animals eat mosquitoes is nowhere near the rate at which mosquitoes reproduce. If anything, a large enough mosquito infestation will attract more unwanted animals.

MYTH 3: MOSQUITOES PREFER TO BE ACTIVE DURING DAWN AND DUSK
Many people believe that mosquitoes are only active in the morning at dawn or towards the evening at dusk. Actually, the times in which mosquitoes are active varies depending on the species. Some mosquitoes may be active during dawn or dusk, but there are other mosquitoes that are active at night or even in broad daylight!
