If you’re trying to maintain a uniform lawn or attractive ground cover, one weed that will pose a particular problem for you is Oxalis, aka woodsorrel. This weed is both an annual and perennial, spreading via seed and rhizome.

Oxalis is a low-growing weed. Before it grows flowers, it looks strikingly like clover. The stems are slightly hairy, branch from the plant’s base, and grow upright. The leaves are trifoliate, meaning they grow in groups of threes, and they are heart-shaped. The leaves are green in color, but another Oxalis species, creeping woodsorrel, has green to purple leaves.

When either of these oxalis species flower, that is yellow woodsorrel and creeping woodsorrel, they produce single flowers or clusters of flowers. These flowers have 5 yellow petals. The seedpods are shaped like okra and can launch seeds long distances.

Oxalis germinates in spring and will start producing flowers and seed pods from late spring through summer. This plant grows well in moist, fertile soil in areas that see full sunlight, but it can also tolerate partial sunlight as well.

Common sites where this weed occurs include vegetable gardens, ornamental gardens, and turf lawns

To eliminate oxalis on commercial or residential properties, use a selective, post-emergent herbicide that’s labeled not to injure your property’s turfgrass.

We recommend you check out Expel Turf Herbicide. Expel is a Sulfentrazone-based product used to control a variety of weed species on cool-season and warm-season turf.

To treat oxalis growing in cool-season lawns, mix the labeled rate of 4 to 8 fluid ounces of the product into 10 gallons of water to apply over 1 acre.
To treat oxalis growing in warm-season lawns, mix the labeled rate of 8 to 12 fluid ounces of the product into 10 gallons of water to apply over 1 acre.

Due to this product’s high-volume applications, high-capacity equipment like a spray rig may be necessary. Once your product is thoroughly mixed, broadcast your solution evenly over the area.

When applied properly, affected weeds will yellow and begin to die. A follow-up application may be necessary if signs of recovery are observed. A reapplication with Expel may be made after 35 days.

Applications are most effective when plants are newly emerged before flower formation.

If you are treating oxalis in ground cover, check the product’s label to ensure your ground cover plant is resistant. Otherwise, this application will injure both the targeted weed and ground cover species.

If Oxalis is a reoccurring problem in your lawn, you can prevent new plants by applying a pre-emergent herbicide like Barricade. Barricade Granular Pre-Emergent Herbicide will form a chemical barrier in your soil that will prevent weed seeds from sprouting and emerging. Depending on your turf grass species, you’ll apply 1.5 to 4 pounds of product per 1,000 square feet. After application, water in the product with at least half an inch of water. Keep in mind that this application will only prevent new oxalis from growing from seed, not by rhizome.

We also recommend you promote the health of your turf to reduce the conducive conditions that allow weeds and disease to take hold. Consider applying a fertilizer like Solutions 15-5-10 Weed & Feed with Trimec. This product is a slow-release fertilizer that will provide lawns with essential nutrients and fight against weed development. With a push spreader, apply 3.2 to 4 pounds of product per 1,000 square feet. When applied properly, your grass will receive a boost in health while the built-in herbicide will control established weeds.
