Jens Wagner has a special job: he is a piano maker at Pianohaus Hübner in Trier. He is to restore a Steinway grand piano from 1921. The model: a so-called "A grand piano", 188 cm long. Wagner's boss Marcus Hübner bought it from an estate in the Eifel region.

Inside the grand piano, the piano maker discovers hardly a single component that he can preserve. Time has left its mark everywhere. The strings are rusty and the dampers are no longer usable. The paint on the cast iron plate is peeling off, he discovers mold on the surface of the sound box and the coverings on the keys are broken. They are still made of ivory.

A weeks-long restoration begins. Craftsmanship accompanies the work and is also present at the Steinway factory in Hamburg when the cast iron plate is repainted.
