In case you feel your ear/s are blocked, specially as a result of a cold, sore throat, allergies, or after a flight then there is something you can do to open up your ears.
Valsalva Manouevre.
The Valsalva manouevre is a very old method of opening up a blocked ear.
You have to close your mouth, pinch your nostrils tight and then by inflating your cheeks you have to apply pressure towards your ears - you will hear a crackling sound and then the ear will open up.
Precautions
- Do not apply too much pressure
- Do not use this method if you have badly infected sinuses
- Do not do it repeatedly
- Do not apply too much pressure
- If the manouevre does not help do not keep doing it- there may be some other cause for your ear blockage - in this case you must go for an ENT check up.
During an ENT check up your ears will be examined and some simple tests like Audiogram Impedance Audiometry may be advised to check for the status of the middle ear function.

Background information
There is a narrow tube called the Eustachian Tube which connects the back of the nose with the middle ear - it is open at both ends. It is the function of the Eustachian Tube to keep the middle ear filled with air.
Sometimes, as a result of a bad cold, nasal allergies, sore throat/tonsillitis, adenoid enlargement etc the Eustachian Tube gets blocked with mucus or due to inflammation.
In this case the air inside the middle ear gets absorbed. This creates a negative pressure which pulls the ear drum inside - towards the middle ear.
