I review a Ram 1500 with the 3rd Gen 3.0L Ecodiesel Engine as a certified Diesel mechanic and give my opinion on this newer Diesel Engine. I explain all the upgraded engine components from earlier Ecodiesel engines, the power figures, fuel economy, tow rating and reliability of the new engine. I also talk about the top 3 issues associated with the third gen ecodiesel engine.

It about time I talked about the newer third gen 3L ecodiesel engine in the RAM 1500 trucks. I earlier model ecodiesel engines were plagued with issues and I figured it would be fun to look and see how chrysler and Ram tried to fix those issues on this newer ecodiesel engine.

First off Ram updated the crankshaft on the third gen ecodiesel engines to help deal with the bottom end failures that were happening on the earlier models and this seems to have really helped the issues.

ram also updated the EGR to a dual high and low pressure system which is very beneficial because less of the carbon is going through the engine which usually always leads to better reliability and longevity.

the engine itself was boosted to 260hp and 480lb-ft of torque and this enigne leads the industry in torque per liter of displacement which is awesome to see.

ram also changed the SCR canister to a bigger heavier duty unit.

the Piston and cylinder heads were also changed to allow more airflow which also reducing the compression ratio. this well help to eliminate NOx emission gases.

the 3rd gen Eco diesel in the 2025 Ram 1500 is also getting a new twin turbo for added power but also because the older ones had a tendency to fail.

overall I think ram properly addressed the main issues of the previous generation and this new third gen engines does certainly seem to be more reliable and less problematic.
