Maybach is not a new name in the automotive world. Founded by Wilhelm Maybach in 1909, the car company produced large luxury vehicles in the pre-war years before it was acquired by Daimler Mercedes-Benz in the 1960s. Maybach remained dormant for decades until Mercedes-Benz launched the independent ultra-luxury marque in 2003. A decade of weak sales lead Mercedes-Benz to shelve the brand once again in 2013 before relaunching it in 2015 as "Mercedes-Maybach".
