Fabulous sights and sounds at the Nevada Railroad Museum's Great Western Steam Up on Friday, 1 July 2022 included runs by the Southern Pacific narrow gauge 4-6-0 No. 18, a clackety standard gauge Heisler, and the Virginia and Truckee 4-4-0 Inyo, among others in this video.
The late Lucius Beebe, 20th century chronicler of the Virginia and Truckee, would have waxed eloquent about the presence of seven V&T steam locomotives at the museum: No. 1, Lyon (unfinished replica); No. 11, Reno (in restoration); No. 12, Genoa; No. 18, Dayton; No. 21, J.W. Bowker; No. 22, Inyo, and 4-6-0 No. 25. Many were static displays; Inyo and No. 25 were in steam. Genoa and J.W. Bowker are on loan from the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento; Reno is owned by the V&T in Virginia City.
The museum's efficient track has a third rail to allow standard or three-foot gauge operations.
That Porter 0-4-0 saddle tank has the nickname Chiggen, and chicken mascots abound. The Nevada State Railroad Museum is to be commended for their care and maintenance of their historic collection, and their efforts like this great steam up.
