With the imminent arrival of the USS Gerald R Ford, you might be forgiven for thinking that now the US Navy has a new carrier class with many new toys, that the outgoing Nimitz Class will be quietly retired and never seen or heard of again.

But with a working life of 50 years, even the first of the line, the Nimitz herself, still has a handful of years service left before even considering retirement, scrapping or whatever else the Navy plans to do to her. So what makes the Nimitz and the other nine ships in the class so special?
