Wars have carved out major places in our history. Since World War One, superior technology has been a major factor in determining who comes out as victorious. One of the most pivotal military inventions of modern history was the aircraft carrier, huge ships that are capable of transporting aircraft of all types to various locations all over the world at a moments notice. Although they were originally invented by the Italians in the early 1900s, their true power wasn't fully displayed until December 7th 1941. This was the day that the Japanese transported their dive bombers close to Hawaii and attacked Pearl Harbor. It was the first time that carriers were used in combat. Afterwards, much of the Pacific campaign of World War 2 was shaped by the use of aircraft carriers.

The carriers have been such pivotal instruments that governments have always been trying to re-imagine and expand ways that they could be used. One idea that caught on for quite a while was how to make a flying aircraft carrier. Now, we are not talking about the flying aircraft carriers that you have probably seen in the Marvel superhero movies. Rather, these ideas and designs were based off of

Originally, the Germans thought it would be best to attempt this by way of using a Zeppelin. It only took them a few attempts before the idea was abandoned as there was no way to return the aircraft safely to the zeppelin and it was unable to hold a large number of planes. The American's also had ideas, even designing and testing a zeppelin of their own known as the Akron. However, they never followed up on them....that is until the miracle of atomic power was discovered.These studies paved the way for the inception of the aircraft
