Isambard Kingdom Brunel is undoubtedly an icon of the industrial age. When he unveiled his plans for the SS Great Western - a giant iron steamship - his peers didn't believe it was possible. Their doubts were squashed in 1838 when the SS Great Western crossed the Atlantic in record time. The age of wood was over, and the age of iron had arrived.
