Is you garden killing out planet ? Since coming over from Europe to this very day, we cling to "western" gardening methods that are poorly suited to the environment in which we live and are major contributors to global warming.

This two hour forum, hosted by Nancy Furness of the Wondrous Tree Fellowship and James Bobick of the Wondrous Tree Fellowship and Burke Mt. Naturalists, is chuck full of information on how you can make your garden more inviting for pollinators and friendlier to the environment.

Ground zero for environmental gardening seems to be western societies persistent desire for pristine grass lawns that we cling to as a status symbol and to demonstrate our control over nature itself.

Nature is now fighting back. With the introduction of the European Chafer beetle to the Vancouver Lower Mainland back in 2015/16, we seem to be loosing an ever increasing battle to maintain our lawns. A whole economy seems to have developed in the battle to maintain our lawns. Grub removal services, re-turfing services, and even worse, chemical treatments for your lawn.

Perhaps it's time to re-strategize. Perhaps it's time to take a hint from nature itself.

There's a wide variety of of options to green grass lawns that we should consider, especially when they require way too much water to maintain in our ever warming environment. Apart from watering our lawns also come at a price with the energy draw required t run electric lawn mowers. Even worse, there are still people cutting their lawns with gas powered lawn mowers which do an incredible amount of damage to our atmosphere.

Adding a splash of color to our gardens in another consideration all together. Have you ever considered to cost to our planet of continually purchasing and planting annuals in your flower garden ? Annuals have a rather large carbon footprint compared to perennials so just making that switch alone can be a big step to making sure you garden is not harming our planet.
