I Review the RAM 1500 5.7L hemi/3.6L pentastar ETorque Hybrid Engines and explain the pros and cons of this electric hybrid system on the ram 1500 trucks. I go over Fuel economy, Power figured including torque, acceleration and transmission performance benefits with the E-torque System. I also go over some known issues and problems and discuss why I don't like the e-torque system as a mechanic.

I got my hands on a nice 2023 Ram 1500 with the E-torque mild hybrid system and I thought it would be cool to compare the system to a truck that does not have e-torque on it.

the first benefit is the added torque that this electric drive motor gives to the truck. ram claims up to 90lb-ft of torque but as I discuss this torque is only available at very certain times and during almost all regular driving conditions it is not available.

the second benefit is the start-stop technology. the engine can be started using the motor and this will in theory save some fuel economy when driving in the city.

the third benefit is smoother transmission shifting. because the motor can spin up the crankshaft to meet the perfect RPMs to create a very smooth shift.

the last benefit comes in the form of regenerative energy capture that this hybrid system can perform. when the truck is slowing down energy is transferred into the 48 volt lithium ion battery pack in the back of the cab.

I put both my truck to the test and with my real world tests it seems like their really is not much added performance with the e-torque system. when accelerating with a fully loaded 8,000lbs trailer the e-torque system did not improve my acceleration which i found disappointing.

the potential issues with this e-torque system is like any other electrical component, added complexity can usually add to less reliability. when this system first came out there were lots of issues with batteries and software issues.

its not that these systems are prone to fail but it does add another layer of complexity to the truck and that could result in less reliability.
