This basement totally scary and was giving off deserted bunker vibes. The previous home owners had used it as a work space so there were some built in desks and it was clear that they had done most of the work themselves with whatever leftover material they had on hand. The previous owners were older so they hadn’t used the laundry room down here for years and the space overall was just… bad. When I first walked through the house, I wasn’t thinking the basement would be a big makeover just from a cost point of view. I figured I’d paint and bring in some cute furniture but not much more. BUT… when my agent came for a walk through at the tail end of my flip, she really encouraged me to put some time and effort into this space because, after all, a useable basement is a HUGE selling point. And she was right.



First step was to pull down all the random materials that had been attached to the ceiling. I was still thinking that maybe a coat of paint on the exposed floor beams would do the trick, but once everything came own, it was clear that the ceiling was a mess and I’d need to have it drywalled.


The laundry area will never be on Pinterest but I was able to replace the platform under the machines. (I’m not sure why it was there, but without and drainage in the basement, seemed smart to elevate the machines just in case of leaks, etc?) I painted everything a nice clean white and then, obviously, replaced the washer/ dryer with these front loaders. I probably wouldn’t hang out here folding laundry, but it’s a huge space and will be a totally functional no-frills laundry space for the next home owner.


Drywallers did a great job even though they left a giant mess. I took advantage of the exposed ceiling and had can lights installed as well. I cleaned up the thinset from the floor and prepped the room for paint. Drywall always has to be primed before painting so I did that as well as painted the exposed steam pipes with a coat of high heat white paint which made a huge difference. I came through with my sprayer and the space looks a million percent better.


I wasn’t planning to do the floor, but once the walls/ ceiling were painted, the floor looked terrible so… onto that I moved next. I was worried about painting it with the right material so that it wouldn’t peel but I did some research and ended up scrubbing it with TSP and then painting it with a floor/ concrete paint and it held up great. I made sure to do a test patch first just in case, and adherence was terrific.


All the windows got new trim and a coat of white paint and then time for furniture. I furnished this whole house from Facebook marketplace/ thrift stores, etc. It was a really fun project and, best part, when the house sold, I was able to sell the furniture also so I didn’t lose any money and still got a fully furnished house!
